Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

The birth of DuVernay's daughter took place on the 24th day of August, 1972, in Long Beach California. DuVernay was inspired to follow her passion of the arts by her aunt Denise when she was a girl. She worked as a night nurse to allow her aunt the space she required during the day to indulge in the passion of literature, art as well as theatre. DuVernay was introduced to the 1961 movie West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay was instructed by her mom that art can be used to promote activism. DuVernay was trained by her mother who was a social sassy and pushed DuVernay to express herself through art. DuVernay had her summers spent in Lowndes County Alabama, where her father was born and raised. The father of DuVernay's recollects seeing the historical march of the Civil Rights Movement across the Edmund Pettus Bridge. It was located in Selma Alabama, a neighboring city. DuVernay would use her summers in Alabama as inspiration for her next film, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay graduated with a high school diploma at Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. Following graduation, she attended her first year at the University of California Los Angeles where she earned qualifications in English as well as African American studies. DuVernay started producing broadcast journalism at the age of an elementary school student. She was an intern with CBS News at the time of the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was tasked to watch and search the home of a particular member of the Jury. Her tasks left her disappointed by journalism and she decided to shift her focus towards the field of publicity. DuVernay was employed by a tiny studio as a junior publicist shortly after graduating from college. In 1999, she founded her own business of public relations called The DuVernay Agency.
